It’s often said that you choose your friends but you can’t choose your family! And in many ways, this is true of the Church. The Church, as the Bible imagines it, is not a social club or special interest group where we mix only with those we have hand-selected and who are similar to us. The Church is the family of God – comprising a whole variety of people, and whom we are called to live in community with. In his letter to the Roman church, Paul unpacks what this might look like, beginning with instructions for how the church family is called to a life of love, honour and devotion internally, and moving onto how we care called to exist in the wider world, including the offering of radical welcome to those not yet in the family.
