I have a plant growing in a pot in our back entry area. I look forward to the day it begins to produce sweet peppers, as God designed it to do. But right now it’s still small and it needs a cane to support it. Eventually it will be strong enough to get by on its own and I’ll take away the cane.

Mentoring is much the same. God designed each of us to do special things, but we all need to grow so we can produce better “fruit”. Mentors like you can assist mentees to develop more quickly.

Thank you for being a cane! But don’t get too proud, even if you are playing a vital role. God created those we mentor, gave them their gifts, brings the growth… God has planned all of this, as we are reminded in John 15.16: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last…”

I look forward to the fruit of my sweet pepper plant. And to the even more important fruit of those we help mentor!
